The new Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, psc, fwc, MNIM, fdc, has formally assumed duty at the State Police Command Headquarters, Umuahia.

This was contained in a release dated June 15, 2023, signed by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Maureen Chioma Chinaka and made available to the media.

The release which underscores CP Onwuemelie’s pedigree of professional excellence, says that he hails from Awka, Anambra State and holds a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Psychology from Anambra State University, adding that he enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1992.

The release further says that CP Onwuemelie who is a distinguished member of various professional organizations, has, in the course of his career, attended extensive local and international courses and holds the record as the first Nigerian non-military personnel to bag fellowship of war college (fwc) as well as fellowship of National Defence College, Nigeria (fdc).

The Abia State Police Command, through the release, called for the cooperation and collaboration of all stakeholders, including state and non-state actors, to support the new Commissioner of Police, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, in his efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.

“Sequel to a recent directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, NEAPS, fdc, CFR, Commissioner of Police Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, psc, fwc, MNIM, fdc, has assumed duty as the 33rd CP for Abia State Police Command. He succeeds CP Mustapha Mohammed Bala, psc, who has been redeployed to the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Force Headquarters Abuja.

“CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, hails from Awka in Anambra State. He holds a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Psychology from Anambra State University. He enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1992.

“In the course of his career, CP Onwuemelie has been exposed to extensive local and international courses. Some of the courses are Intermediate Command Course (ICC) at the Police Staff College Jos, Higher Military Strategy and Management Course at the Army War College Nigeria; Higher Management of Defence and Strategic Course at the National Defence College Nigeria, Integrated Approach to Urban Safety Course in Israel, International Visitor Leadership Program Course USA, International Course for Senior Police Officers, in China, Policy Strategy and Leadership Course, at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). Others are the Protection of Civilians Course organized by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations; Strategy Development Course delivered by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), among many other courses.

“ CP Kenechuwkwu Onwuemelie has served in various local and international policing positions. Some of the positions are Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Operations Imo State Police Command, DCP Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Ogun State Police Command, Contingent Commander Nigeria Police Contingent at the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, Deputy Chief of Counseling and Support Team at the UN Mission in Kosovo, Member of Enhancement Force at the UN Mission in Kosovo, Staff Officer Policy and Strategy at the Inspector General of Police’s Secretariat, Police Liaison Officer to National Assembly, Aide de Camp to President of the Senate, and Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), FCT Police Command Abuja, among many other positions.

“CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie is a distinguished member of various professional organizations. He is an alumnus of the National Defence College Nigeria and the Army War College Nigeria, indicating his expertise in defense and military strategies. His international affiliations include the Weitz Center for Development Studies in Rehovot, Israel, and the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in USA. He is also a member of esteemed organizations such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) in USA. In Nigeria, he is a member of the National Institute of Management (Chartered).

“Having successfully completed the Staff College Course (psc) at the Nigeria Police Staff College in Jos, Plateau State, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, who holds the record as the first Nigerian non-military personnel to bag fellowship of war college (fwc) and as well as fellowship of the National Defence College Nigeria (fdc), will leverage his formidable background, experience, and extensive professional network to introduce innovative approaches to policing in order to enhance the efficiency of police service delivery in Abia State.
