The Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, Imo State, is to be upgraded to a Federal University of Education, according to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Three other Colleges of Education to be similarly upgraded are the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Ondo State; Federal College of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State and the Federal College of Education, Kano, Kano State.

This was contained in a letter to the Provost, Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, dated June 2, 2023 with reference ADF/ABJ/559/IV/23, signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education by the Director, Colleges of Education, Dr. U. C. Uba, inviting the Provost to a meeting at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, on June 7, 2023.

The letter noted that during President Goodluck Jonathan administration, four Colleges of Education were upgraded to Federal Universities of Education but the implementation was put on hold by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. It further informed that approval had been granted for the reversion of ban placed on the upgrade of the Colleges, and invited the Provost to a meeting to discuss preliminary steps for implementing the Presidential approval.
