Government Secondary School Owerri has recorded another major milestone as it was selected among the six pilot schools for the digitalization of basic education in Imo State under the Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
The selection is widely seen as another significant achievement of the Old Boys Association under current Administration piloted by Arc. Chidi Okoli whose proactive leadership and timely interventions have continued to attract developmental projects and strategic partnerships to the school.
To commence the implementation process, stakeholders from the six selected schools—comprising four primary schools and two secondary schools—met today Tuesday 30th June, 2026 with the Chairman of Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Chidiebere Egboh, at the Board’s headquarters.
Representing Government Secondary School, Owerri at the meeting were the Chairman of the Owerri Branch of the Old Boys Association Engr Dr Obioma Iwuamadi, the National Publicity Secretary of the Association Comrade Destiny Udodiri Akunesi, and the two Principals of the school Mr Chris Uzoigwe and Mr Martins Iheka, on behalf of the National President, the Association, and the school community.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Vivian Owunna, Director of Data, Digital Platforms & Analysis Imo SUBEB, explained that the six schools were carefully selected from the three senatorial zones of the state. According to her, Government Secondary School, Owerri was chosen because it is regarded as a model school within its zone. Other selection criteria included the availability of modern classrooms, commitment to providing adequate security for the equipment, and the provision of reliable solar power.

Government Secondary School, Owerri.
Eziachi Secondary School, Orlu.
Development Primary School, Owerri.
Powerline Primary School, Omuma.
Akokwa Model Primary School, Akokwa.
Community Primary School, Umunuhu Nsu, Ehime Mbano.
Addressing the stakeholders, the Chairman of Imo SUBEB, Hon. Chidiebere Egboh, congratulated the selected schools and commended the Executive Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, for investing in digital education through the provision of state-of-the-art interactive digital boards. He disclosed that each board costs approximately ₦12 million and that each pilot school will receive five interactive boards for five classrooms.
He highlighted the numerous benefits of the digital school initiative, including enhanced teaching and learning, self-paced learning opportunities for students, savings in time and educational resources, improved teacher effectiveness, preparation of learners for a technology-driven future, and uninterrupted learning during emergencies.
Hon. Egboh, however, stressed that the sustainability of the project depends largely on the commitment of stakeholders to provide effective security against theft, vandalism, and damage, as well as dependable solar-powered electricity to ensure continuous operation of the digital facilities.
The inclusion of Government Secondary School, Owerri among the six pioneer digital schools in Imo State represents another landmark achievement for the institution. Stakeholders attributed the feat to the swift intervention and visionary leadership of the National President, Arc. Chidi Okoli, whose administration has remained committed to repositioning the school through meaningful partnerships and developmental initiatives.
Members of the school community have expressed optimism that the project will significantly improve the quality of teaching and learning, further strengthening Government Secondary School, Owerri’s reputation as one of the leading public secondary schools in Imo State.
