Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu embodies the qualities of a true leader—brave, truthful, and unselfish. His impact reverberates beyond the hallowed halls of the National Assembly, touching the lives of millions of Nigerians. As a distinguished legislator, he embodies the essence of Nigerian resilience and leadership.
His journey from international businessman and legal practitioner to the Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives is a testament to his unwavering commitment to public service. The journey wasn’t without challenges. His audacious bid for the Speakership of the House of Representatives exemplified his gumption and determination. Despite the odds, he dared to lead, ultimately paving the way for his current role as Deputy Speaker.
Kalu has consistently demonstrated competence and leadership across various spheres. His eloquence and ability to articulate complex issues make him a powerful advocate for the House of Representatives. Whether addressing the Pan African Parliament or speaking on domestic matters, Kalu’s sagacity shines through.
Beyond legislative prowess, Kalu’s humanity sets him apart. His unselfish commitment to serving the people underscores his leadership. Whether championing policies or engaging with constituents, he remains grounded in the needs of the Nigerian populace.
He advocates for policies that safeguard Nigeria’s environment. His commitment to sustainable practices contributes to national well-being. As a dynamic member of the National Assembly, he has proactively investigated failures within governmental agencies, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Recently, during a plenary session, Hon. Cyril Hart, representing the Bonny/Degema federal constituency of Rivers State, accused Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu of favoring senior members over first-timers during debates.
The Deputy Speaker swiftly clarified that there is “no discrimination in parliament.” He emphasized that all members—whether old or new, ranking or not—are colleagues and equal. He further explained that recognition for speaking is based on seating arrangement, not age, tribe, nor political experience. If someone is not in the designated row, they may be overlooked – He said.
As presiding officers, Kalu views himself and others as servant-leaders committed to upholding democratic ethos: that their role is to provide direction, ensuring all voices are heard. He assured that the 10th House, under Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, will remain fair, just, and open to every member. Privileged positions do not elevate anyone above their colleagues; respect and recognition prevail in the spirit of equality and brotherhood.
No doubt, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker, continues to shape Nigeria’s legislative landscape, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s governance. His legacy is one of service, resilience, and unwavering dedication to the common good. He stands firm in spite of all odds in promoting fairness, transparency, and unity within the National Assembly.
