Widely celebrated Sam Amuka-Pemu stands tall in the annals of Nigerian journalism as a columnist, editor and publisher. He ran the avant-garde Sunday Punch newspaper that wrote outstanding feature stories and had a populist orientation and thorough coverage of the issues of the day, including the encounters of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti with the Nigerian Police and Army at the Kalakuta Republic.

His Sad Sam column was a satirist’s delight in the Sunday Times of his era.

He was a co-founder of The Punch and then went on to establish Vanguard newspapers in 1983 after an apprenticeship as a fish monger. Uncle Sam is an entrepreneur.

Uncle Sam is an encourager.
This daddy, a prince, has the human touch. Happy birthday, Uncle Sam.
